With over 250 active renewable fuel production facilities in the United States, we thought it was due time to map them all out and get the bigger picture.
Here are some trends we’ve seen from our deep-dive research of facilities by state:
– States like Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska continue to lead in ethanol production due to abundant corn supplies and established infrastructure.
– Similar to ethanol, biodiesel production is concentrated in states with significant agricultural output, such as Iowa, Texas, and Illinois, where feedstock availability is high.
– Facilities are increasingly using a variety of feedstocks, including used cooking oil, animal fats, and other non-food sources, which enhances sustainability and reduces competition with food crops.
– State and federal policies, including the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and tax incentives, continue to play a significant role in the establishment and operation of biodiesel plants.
Know of any active ethanol or biodiesel production facilities that didn’t make the list?
Leave a comment below and we will get it added!
A big thank you to Biodiesel Magazine for being such a good resource for this project.
